Everything comes with a cost. That which you gain pleasure from, you incur the eventual pain which comes with the inevitable loss.
Does the pain justify the happiness?
It may. It may not.
But we were not made this way. Not made to calculate the outcomes of every single minuscule event in life. No, we were made to live in the present.
This unfortunately leads to the problem of gambling. But that's another story.
Fear of loss. It is a rational fear which we were not designed to act upon. Or at least, designed that it weighs little enough such that whatever perceived immediate benefit outweighs the eventual loss.
But what if one cannot see the perceived benefit of the present?
